Official Plan

Brantford's Official Plan is a statement of goals, objectives and policies intended to guide future land use, physical development, growth and change within the city limits. The policies of the Plan are designed to maintain a good quality of life for the citizens of Brantford, to reduce uncertainty concerning future development, and to provide a basis for land use controls. The Official Plan provides the basis for the Zoning By-law applying to properties within the City.

The existing Official Plan evolves with the City, and is occasionally altered and updated. Sometimes it is necessary to amend the Plan to provide appropriate policy or land use designation for development that wasn't anticipated when the Plan was prepared. Sometimes the City is required to update the Plan to conform to new Provincial policies.

The City is currently in the process of an Official Plan Review to update the existing document for the future, and to recognize the new municipal boundary. Please see the Envisioning Our City 2041 Official Plan Review web page for details about the process. The new Official Plan will incorporate the Boundary Expansion Lands into the City of Brantford Official Plan, and conform to recent Provincial requirements contained in the 2017 Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. At the present time, the Boundary Expansion Lands remain subject to policies contained in the Brant County Official Plan.
