Urban Design

Urban design involves the arrangement and design of buildings, landscapes, streets, and public spaces at a range of scales, from – City-wide, district and block level, right down to an individual site. It is the process of giving form, shape, and character to the physical elements that comprise neighbourhoods and the City.

The City of Brantford established Urban Design Guidelines for Intensification Proposals through its Intensification Strategy and Implementation Plan, adopted by City Council on September 24, 2012.

The Urban Design Guidelines for Intensification Proposals reflect the City’s expectations with respect to the character, quality and form of development. The guidelines represents a consistent design baseline to which all new development proposals should meet or exceed and will be used by City staff to assess proposed developments within the City’s Built-Boundary, Intensification Corridors, and Urban Growth Centre.

Urban Design Brief

An Urban Design Brief (UDB) is intended to describe and illustrate proposed designs for new development projects and demonstrate how the City’s Urban Design Guidelines have been considered as part of the site design. Developers submitting intensification proposals must show how the City's design guidelines will be incorporated into new development proposals.

Planning staff may request that qualified professionals submit an Urban Design Brief as part of a complete application to assist with the review of development applications for intensification proposals and to confirm that proper consideration has been given to the City's design guidelines and policies.

Urban Design Brief - Terms of Reference

To assist developers in the development review process, City staff has drafted a term-of-reference for the submission of Urban Design Briefs. The terms-of-reference outlines the City's key considerations when assessing the design merits of intensification proposals within the context of existing neighbourhoods. In addition, the terms-of-reference provides developers with a consistent framework for preparation and review of Urban Design Briefs.
