Recycling Program 

   

Set your Blue Box of recyclables at the curb, with your garbage, after 7:00 p.m. the night before or before 7:00 a.m. the day of your collection.

Please Note: Residents are to note that only City approved Blue Boxes are to be used for the set out of recyclable materials.  These Blue Boxes must be between 60L(16 gallon) - 87L (23 gallon) in size.  Large wheeled recycling containers are not currently permitted for use by residents.

"2 SORT" Method

In one Blue Box place plastics (#1, #2 or #5), waxed cartons, glass, metal and aluminum.

In a second Blue Box place newspaper, including junkmail, paper, envelopes, books and magazines, and boxboard.

Corrugated cardboard (OCC) can placed in the second Blue Box or bundled, tied and placed beside the boxes.  Please note bundles should be clean and  no larger than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20cm (30 inches x 30 inches x 8 inches).  Remove all food residue from boxes.

Please remember to sort and separate all recyclables.

Blue Box Recycling Guide: What We Accept

Paper & Junkmail - newspaper, wrapping paper, inserts, phone books, magazines/catalogues, paperback books, junk-mail, office paper, envelopes with windows removed

  • place in paper or plastic bag next to or on top of Blue Box

Corrugated Cardboard

  • flattened and tied in 75 cm x 75 cm (30" x 30") sections up to 20 cm (8") thick
  • place beside Blue Box

Boxboard - cereal/detergent & shoe boxes, egg cartons, cardboard tubes, brown paper bags

  • clean of lining or paper
  • flatten & place into a boxboard box or paper/plastic bag

Plastic Containers, Milk/Juice Cartons, Drinking Boxes

    
  • remove lids & rinse (only recycle if labeled 1, 2 or 5 plastics)
  • flatten containers if possible
  • DO NOT include plastic wrap, styrofoam, toys, rubbermaid products or other durable plastics)

Glass Bottles & Jars

  • remove lids & rinse
  • recycle metal lids on cans
  • place loosely in the Blue Box
  • DO NOT include any other types of glass OR broken glass

Food & Beverage Containers

  • rise containers
  • place metal lids inside container
  • pinch the top to trap lids inside container
  • place loosely in Blue Box
  • DO NOT include frozen juice cans (unless all metal), metal pots or any other metal products

Aluminum Trays & Foil

  • clean & flatten aluminum trays & foil (pie plates. fast food trays)
  • place loosely in Blue Box
  • DO NOT include aluminum foil or trays that are soiled or foils with paper or plastic lamination

Paint Containers

  • make sure containers are empty
  • take lids off paint cans to let fully dry
  • place in Blue Box - don't bag them

Do You Need a New Blue Box?

If you are a resident of the City of Brantford and are in need of a new Blue Box for recycling, they are available at:

Public Works Department, 10 Earl Ave.
Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. ONLY.

Tourism Centre, 399 Wayne Gretzky Parkway 
Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. & Sunday 12 noon - 4:00 p.m. ONLY. 

Residents are required to provide their name, address and phone number when obtaining a Blue Box and may be asked for identification. Limits are placed on replacement Blue Boxes and are available to residents of Brantford ONLY.
