Public Hall

“Public Hall” means a lot and a building, or structure, or portion thereof, including, but not limited to, a portable building or tent with a seating capacity for over 100 persons that is offered for use or used as a place of public assembly, but shall not include a theatre or a building used solely for religious purposes. Such public hall may include facilities for the on-site preparation and consumption of foods and beverages; and

“Theatre” means a lot and a building, or structure, or portion thereof, used for the presentation of musical, theatrical, or film performances and shall include accessory uses such as lounges, dressing rooms, workshops, and storage areas but shall not include a drive-in theatre.

Public Halls are not exempt from the City of Brantford noise Bylaw.  The licensee must show proof of holding valid Public Liability and Property Damage insurance in the amount of not less than three million as well as an Ontario Hydro clearance certificate renewed every three years.  The location of the Public Hall must be operated within the provisions of the City’s Zoning Bylaw 160-90.  Applications are circulated to the respective department(s) as per the associated Bylaw for comment and/or inspection. 

Public Hall - Increase in Temporary Capacity

If the holder of the Public Hall Licence requires a temporary increase in the maximum capacity of the facility for a particular occasion or event, the owner/operator may apply to the Issuer of Licences for such.  After consultation with one or more inspectors, the licence may be amended in order for the temporary increase in capacity as may be permitted by applicable legislation, and may have additional terms and conditions in the amended licence as recommended by the inspector(s).

Public Hall - Amended Capacity

If the holder of the Public Hall Licence requires an increase in the maximum capacity stated on the licence, the owner/operator may apply to the Issuer of Licences for such increase.  After consultation with one or more inspectors, the licence may be amended in order for increase in capacity as may be permitted by applicable legislation, and may have additional terms and conditions in the amended licence as recommended by the inspector(s).
