February 2016: Daniel Cairo

February’s Featured Artist is local impressionist painter, Daniel Cairo.

Cairo was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and immigrated to Canada in 2001. He grew up in a family that had a tremendous passion for the art – every family member had some kind of artistic talent, including his mother, Violeta who he credits as the person who inspired him to create. Now, he has been painting every day for the last 15 years, and looks forward to coming home from work each day to practice his craft.

He started painting small portraits, and as he gained confidence, the scale of his work grew much larger. Now, he focuses on painting complex landscapes and historic architecture. Some of these paintings of historic architecture include a new series of 12 works, depicting iconic scenes in Brantford. The collection is displayed in a beautiful gallery in his home.

Cairo loves Brantford, and says he decided to live in this city from the first day he visited in 2006. He loves the heritage, architecture, landscape, and farmlands that Brantford has to offer, and he finds inspiration in Brantford’s landscape and built heritage every day.

When meeting Cairo, he talked about his passion for local trails, and exploring Brantford with camera-in-hand. He works from these photographs to create paintings that look like you could step into them – Traces of Winter Light (below) is an example. In his home, Cairo has set up lighting on this piece in a way that makes you feel like the sun is actually rising behind the snow-covered trees.

His advice for emerging artists is to practice, practice, and practice: “My techniques and work did not improve overnight. I paint every day after work, and all weekend long. Just like anything, in order to excel, you have to commit a lot of time and dedication to whatever it may be.” He continues to visit as many international galleries as possible, learning from the Old Masters like Manet and Singer Sargent.

Cairo looks forward to exhibiting his work more frequently, and sharing his passion with the local community. “Being an artist, and having people love my work, has always been my dream… don’t ever give up on your dreams.” For more information about Daniel Cairo, visit his website by clicking here to open a new browser window.
