Update December 1, 2010

The North of Shellard Neighbourhood and Recreation Plan project is on schedule.  The next public session has been tentatively scheduled for late February 2011.

Update - October 5, 2010

The City has retained the services of The Planning Partnership to prepare a neighbourhood plan and a recreation plan with a concept for a recreation/sports centre on the north side of Shellard Lane in the Southwest area of the City.

A public design workshop is scheduled this week (October 6th & 7th) to discuss the design of the community and recreational needs of the City. The public workshop is open to all residents, property owners, user groups, and stakeholders with the intent to provide a hands-on forum in which the public will aid the consultants in the design of the community plan and recreation centre.

The project has a phased approach. The first phase was the review of current data and preliminary environmental and engineering analysis.  The second phase is based upon a comprehensive design workshop.  We will provide an opportunity for as many members of the public as possible to attend, meet with the consulting team, have a focused discussion with staff, stakeholders, Members of Council, property owners about natural heritage features, transportation, servicing and community design principles. Those who attend will be able to participate in the development of three possible design options for the neighbourhood and two design options for the recreation plan.  Based on the input gained from this event, the consultants will start to formulate the finalized plans.

There is great community and user group interest in this new initiative. Some groups are more advanced in their plans for use of the site and have taken the opportunity to prepare some of their own concepts as input to the study. The City appreciates the enthusiasm and initiative of these groups, and will take their comments and suggestions into consideration within the context of the public process. At this time it is important to recognize that there have not been any decisions made regarding the final plan. The continued participation by all interested groups is strongly encouraged.

In terms of timelines, the final proposed North of Shellard Neighbourhood and Recreation Plan will be presented to the City of Brantford Council in the New Year.

Councillor Mark Littell

Chair, North of Shellard Task Force
