Brantford’s Earth Hour Extravaganza!

For the third year in a row, the Branlyn Neighbourhood Youth Association is rallying residents and businesses of Brantford to participate in Earth Hour, a worldwide movement that demands action to combat climate change.

Earth Hour aims to educate communities on the threat of climate change and teach tactics that result in decreased daily energy consumption.  By encouraging as many individuals, households, and businesses as possible to turn off their lights, Earth Hour demonstrates that, by working together, the people of the world can make a difference in the fight against global warming.  Widespread support of Earth Hour demonstrates to governments of the world that meaningful legislation is needed to reverse the damaging effects of climate change.

On Saturday, March 27 from 8:30  to 9:30 p.m., the City of Brantford, in conjunction with Brantford Power, will join other cities around the world to “turn out the lights.”  Where feasible and without jeopardizing safety, all non-essential lighting in all City facilities will be shut off for the hour.

Residents and businesses – show your support for Earth Hour by shutting off lights and non-essential power for one hour, from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.!

The Earth Hour celebration at Harmony Square is open to all, with free entertainment and the official “lights out.”  The celebration begins at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, with Brantford Transit providing free service to and from Harmony Square from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m.  Entertainment will include the Hamilton Youth Steel Orchestra, magician Mark Baluk, a ‘Plant a Seed’ workshop by Home Depot, Making Art from Recyclables, face-painting, and more.  Sparky the Fire Dog and the Brantford Fire Department will also be on-hand to help celebrate Earth Hour.

To volunteer, or for more information on this event, please contact the Branlyn Neighbourhood Youth Association at 519-751-0889.

Brantford will go a bold step further in 2010 to support the work to reduce climate change by adopting the hour between 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month as a continuance of Earth Hour.  The City is set to shut off all non-essential lighting and power for that hour on the last Saturday of each month – join in  and do even more to support the fight against global warming!
