Fight Against Climate Change: Join Earth Hour 2009

One person can’t make a difference … nothing will happen while I’m alive … global warming is a myth. Agree? If not, it’s time to do your part – stand up for our precious planet, and for what you believe in on March 28, 2009, by turning your lights off for one hour – Earth Hour.

March 10, 2009

The Branlyn Neighbourhood Youth Association, in conjunction with the City of Brantford and Brantford Power, urges you to do this simple thing and participate in Earth Hour 2009. This event is a call to action to every person, business and community around the world to stand up and take responsibility for our planet’s future.

The City of Brantford is joining other cities around the world in “turning out the lights” by shutting off all non-essential lighting in all of its facilities, for one full hour, starting at 8:30 p.m. on March 28, 2009.

Get involved, and come out to Brantford’s Earth Hour celebration in Harmony Square, starting at 8:00 p.m. Organizers are hoping to have enough people in the square to be able to stand holding candles or flashlights in an arrangement that spells “Earth Hour” from the air.

"I am excited that the Earth Hour committee has decided to celebrate Earth Hour again in Harmony Square in 2009. We are expecting large crowds this year and I am sure that everyone will experience a very insightful hour. Only 1 hour - makes a world of difference! I hope to see you at Harmony Square for Lights Out," Lori-Dawn Cavin, Community Events Coordinator with the City of Brantford, said.

This is Brantford’s second year participating in Earth Hour. Last year, the Branlyn Youth Neighbourhood Association had little time to put together a campaign for the event. Despite that, they still managed to lead our city into saving 3,930 kilowatt hours, and had over 500 people attend the event in Harmony Square. With more time to plan and promote, organizers are hoping to increase this number in 2009.

The Earth Hour effort, currently with over 64 participating countries, sends a strong message to world leaders that when a global effort is made, anything is possible. Climate change is the biggest environmental threat to our planet, and the number one concern for Canadians.

Earth Hour is a message of hope and action – everyone can choose to make a difference and participate in something so simple as turning off some lights.

This eco-friendly movement began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million home and businesses turned out their lights. Last year, the Earth Hour grew to having include 50 million people throughout 35 different countries join. This year, the goal is to have one billion people in over 1,000 communities participate and “turn out the lights.”
