Olympic Excitement Set to Take Over the Town

The City is thrilled to be one of over 1,000 communities and places of interest that the Olympic torch will travel through on its way to the Vancouver 2010 Games. An Olympic Torch Relay Community Task Force has been preparing a series of events for December 21, 2009, and is seeking out local athletes that are or have participate din the Olympics, Special Olympics or Paralympics to join the party!

August 26, 2009

The City of Brantford is honoured to be recognized as a 2010 Olympic Torch Relay route community. As the flame winds its way across the country in the longest national Olympic Torch Relay ever, it will ignite the anticipation that is expected to grow to incredible heights as we welcome the flame on December 21st, 2009, and showcase Brantford to Canada and the world.

The celebration is a chance for Brantford to celebrate our sports legacies, showcase our unique heritage and diverse culture and honour local athletes. As part of the events on December 21st, the Olympic Torch Relay Community Task Force is seeking local athletes who are or have participated in the Olympics, Special Olympics or Paralympics to share their stories and memories with the youth in our community.

There are a few ways that athletes can get involved in the celebration.

Participate in the athlete pre-event passport program (children will visit participating locations in downtown Brantford and collect autographs on their passport)

Involvement on the Olympic stage during the celebration in the evening

Provide a message for the video presentation that will be shown at school presentations and during the post-event party

Provide a testimonial for our website and media releases answering the question - “What did the Olympic experience mean to me?” Or “What do the Olympics mean to me?”

The Olympic Torch Relay Community Task Force has been able to compile a short list of local athletes to contact, but we’re hoping to acquire a database of names from the community that can be contacted to participate in this once-and-a-lifetime experience.

Athletes or their families and friends are asked to contact Pat Shewchuk, Tournament Capital Coordinator.  Click here to be connected to her email addres, or call 519-756-1500.
