BRANTFORD – As the City of Brantford prepares to host another fun filled, eventful Zombie Walk at Hamony Square on Saturday October 8th, we got to thinking, are you prepared? Okay, we concede that the likelihood of a Zombie Apocalypse isn’t realistic, though tornados, floods, hurricanes and severe winter storms are VERY real and it’s important to know the risks and to prepare you and your family for any emergency.

To celebrate Brantford’s annual Zombie Walk and Emergency Preparedness month, the City of Branford invites you to participate in our “Are You Ready” Contest to encourage as many residents as possible to be emergency ready.

How the Contest Works

The City of Brantford wants to see a photo of your 72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Kit. The photo should contain everything you need if you are without running water or electricity for a minimum of 72 hours including:

  • Water – at least two litres of water per person per day; include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order
  • Food that won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (replace food and water once a year)
  • Manual can-opener
  • Crank or battery-powered flashlight (and extra batteries). Replace batteries once a year.
  • Crank, battery-powered radio (and extra batteries) or Weatheradio
  • First aid kit
  • Extra keys to your car and house
  • A copy of your emergency plan and contact information
  • If applicable, other items such as prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities, or food, water and medication for your pets or service animal (personalize according to your needs)

Photos will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • How many authentic emergency preparedness items can be identified in your kit
  • Functionality potential of the items in your kit in the event of an emergency
  • Creativity of your photo presentation

Contest Rules:

  1. All pictures posted become the property of The Corporation of the City of Brantford.
  2. Pictures will only be posted via social media, without names or addresses.
  3. Posting the photo gives the City of Brantford the authorization and permission to judge and share the image.
  4. Pictures cannot include people or identifying features such as your house, mailbox or car.
  5. Any photos with weapons of any kind will be immediately deleted from the site, disqualified, and if warranted turned over to the jurisdiction of Brantford Police.
  6. Any photos deemed indecent or offensive by the City of Brantford will be immediately deleted and disqualified.

The winner of the “Are Your Ready” contest will be notified via Facebook or Twitter on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016, and a multi-gift card grand prize package worth $150.00 will be awarded to the winner at the Zombie Walk event at Harmony Square (89 Dalhousie St.) on Saturday October 8, 2016 at 6pm.
