City Council recently passed a bylaw requiring homeowners in Brantford to install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms.
The new bylaw requires the installation of carbon monoxide alarms under the following conditions:
- In each dwelling unit containing a fuel-burning appliance.
- For a building containing multiple dwelling units, in each dwelling unit located on the same floor level as a fuel-burning appliance.
- For a building containing multiple dwelling units, in each dwelling unit located on the first and second floor levels of the building above a floor level containing a fuel-burning appliance.
- In each dwelling unit which contains an attached garage or where there are multiple dwelling units on the same level as an attached garage.
Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels including: gasoline, oil, natural gas, propane and wood. Dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide can accumulate when fuel is not burned properly in an appliance as a result of poor installation, poor maintenance, failure or damage to the appliance.
Because carbon monoxide has no smell, taste or colour, it has been labeled “the silent killer”. It is important to have good ventilation, maintain all appliances regularly and have a reliable carbon monoxide detector installed to signal immediately when there is a build up or Carbon Monoxide to dangerous levels.
