The Grand River Conservation Authority is terminating its flood watches and warnings issued over the past two weeks.

Water levels in the Lower Grand River are peaking today through Dunnville and will drop later in the day. Flows are receding across the entire Grand River watershed and will continue to drop over the next few days.

Water levels will remain high but are expected to stay within river and stream banks.

Levels in the Conestogo, Belwood (Shand Dam) and Guelph reservoirs are now back to their normal operating range for this time of year. Discharges have been reduced and will be reduced again in coming days.

The GRCA wants to thank municipal flood coordinators and emergency responders for their work during the spring melt to respond to flooding and keeping their residents informed and safe.

As flows drop, some roads that have been closed will be reopened over the next few days by municipal staff. That includes Three Bridges Road near St. Jacobs in Woolwich Township, Black Bridge Road in Cambridge and Grand Sports Road in Haldimand County. vThe ground throughout the watershed remains saturated. This means that the river system will react quickly to rainfall and remaining snow melt in the extreme north end in Dufferin County. The GRCA will continue to monitor conditions closely.

Safety Message

Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are slippery and when combined with cold, fast-moving water pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from water courses and off any remaining frozen water bodies.

Recreational river users should be aware that there is a lot of debris in the river system as a result of the December ice storm. Some of the branches and trees may lie just below the water surface and pose danger to kayakers and canoeists. Please be alert to this potential danger.
