Brant MP Phil McColeman today announced up to $2 million from the Harper Government for a rehabilitation project that will benefit residents and the environment surrounding Mohawk Lake.

Over the years, the quality of Mohawk Lake and the adjacent canal has deteriorated due to stormwater drainage and industrial discharge. The proposed project includes: the completion of additional studies including water and sediment sampling; the development of a Mohawk Lake Master Management Plan; the development of specific remediation options; and undertaking water quality improvements.

Mohawk Lake and canal are adjacent to the Greenwich Mohawk Brownfield, which is currently under remediation. They all form part of the Greenwich-Mohawk Lake District, which the City hopes to revitalize and redevelop with community input.

The federal funding for this proposed project is conditional upon the completion of a due diligence review, parliamentary approval, and the signing of an agreement stating the project’s details.

Quick Facts

  • Mohawk Lake, first constructed in the early 1800s, is a 13-hectare lake in the City of Brantford and includes a canal of approximately two kilometres.
  • The Harper Government is investing up to $12 million in the Greenwich Mohawk Brownfield Remediation Project, which is currently underway and anticipated to be completed by the end of 2016.
  • Since its creation in August 2009, FedDev Ontario has invested more than $1.4 billion, resulting in partnerships with over 12,000 organizations and more than $2 billion in additional leveraged investments to support businesses, organizations and communities.

“This funding means we are recovering Mohawk Lake, re-establishing it as a unique urban ecological gem, and restoring it back to the community. By cleaning up the lake, the canal, and the brownfield next door, we’re setting the stage to truly realize the potential of a revitalized and redeveloped Greenwich-Mohawk Lake District.” - Phil McColeman, Member of Parliament for Brant
"With this level of support we are closer to achieving our goal of revitalizing Mohawk Lake and creating a vibrant Mohawk Lake District. This is an initiative that demonstrates inclusiveness of the community, innovation, and respect for the unique heritage of this Lake and surrounding lands. We look forward to collaborating with our federal, provincial and local partners to make the new Mohawk Lake District a reality." - Chris Friel, Mayor of Brantford
