BRANTFORD, ON – In Spring 2018, CityStudio Brantford piloted a Cigarette Ballot Bin to explore a creative method to reduce cigarette litter in the downtown. Developed by a Wilfrid Laurier University Brantford graduate, John Panesso Ramirez, the intent of the “Cigarette Ballot Bin” is to provide an incentive for pedestrians to dispose of their cigarette litter in a receptacle by giving users the opportunity to ‘vote’ on a particular question. For example, ‘Which team will win the Stanley Cup?’ is one of the questions users of the bin can weigh in on.

CityStudio Brantford Cigarette Ballot BinThe goal is to use the novelty of the design to capture the attention of by passers, encourage proper disposal and ultimately reduce the amount of cigarette litter on the ground. Use of the bins improves the appearance of the sidewalk and reduces the long-term environmental impact of cigarette litter being washed into the City’s sewer system.

In the first four weeks of the project, the ballot bin, located on Market Street downtown, is estimated to have received over 1.5 pounds of litter, equaling 4,000 discarded cigarettes. This usage rate demonstrates that the Cigarette Ballot Bin can be a very effective tool in reducing cigarette litter. To date, the pilot project has received very positive feedback from business owners, patrons, and pedestrians in the downtown.

The Cigarette Ballot Bin is one of several projects developed as a result of CityStudio Brantford; an innovation hub where students, faculty and City staff to tackle community issues and co-create solutions that support the City’s strategic priorities. CityStudio provides an experiential learning opportunity where students and faculty connect with City of Brantford staff to research, design, and implement projects while developing job skills, experiencing group processes, and networking with municipal sector experts.

Brantford is one of seven cities worldwide to implement a CityStudio partnership. Other communities include Vancouver, BC, Victoria, BC, Abbotsford, BC, Waterloo Ont., Corner Brook Nfld., and the Australian cities of Logan and Bendigo.
