Brantford Welcomes Ontario Basketball Championships

Brantford will be the host destination to the second of four Ontario Cup Basketball Championships from Friday, May 4 to Sunday, May 6. Thirty-four teams from the Ontario Basketball Under-17 Atom Girls division will take to the courts to showcase their skill and determination. There will be five divisions played throughout the weekend.

The host organization, Brantford Briers Basketball is very pleased and excited to welcome all teams to this fantastic basketball event. The Ontario Basketball Championships will return to Brantford in 2013 when we host the Under-11 and Under-17 Atom Girls.

"The teams and individuals that participate in the Ontario Basketball Championships come from all across Ontario. Hosting four tournaments in two years is an enormous opportunity to showcase everything that Brantford has to offer,” said Donna Clements, Acting Marketing Manager with Tourism Brantford. “Not only are they coming to play basketball, they are enjoying our hospitality, shopping at our retail outlets and exploring our community as a whole.”

Brantford Briers Basketball, in cooperation with Tourism Brantford, worked together to submit the bid to win the championships as well as prepare for the upcoming tournament. Brantford is one of 10 communities selected to host the basketball championships over the next two years. The economic impact for Brantford per year for the age divisions hosted here is estimated at $1.6 million over the two weekends.


About the Bid Process

This Ontario Cup bid process marked the first time that Ontario Basketball accepted a two-year proposal. After speaking with past host member clubs, Ontario Basketball recognized the need for increased time to schedule these the type of quality facilities required for an Ontario Cup tournament. As the organization looks to evolve its provincial championships from just a basketball tournament to an event - a celebration of basketball that includes not only the games but also local community outreach, coach education, club recruitment, media attention and sponsor activation - it was important to provide host clubs and Ontario Basketball with enough time to plan such festivities.
