May 14 to 20, 2012 has been proclaimed Tourism Awareness Week by Brantford City Council.
With this proclamation, Council is recognizing the national celebration that highlights the economic impact and social benefits of Canada’s tourism sector among the media and general public in Brantford.
Proclamation - Tourism Awareness Week – May 14 to 20, 2012
WHEREAS the tourism industry in Brantford is a significant employer with 20 percent of the workforce employed in this sector; it is a source of tax revenue contributing $1.3 million to the municipality annually, and an important driver of economic growth adding over $75 million each year to the local economy; and
WHEREAS Brantford and area’s economic success stems in part from its unique and diverse attractions as a tourism destination that includes the Grand River: A Canadian Heritage River; five National Historic Sites, including the Bell Homestead; 11 additional museums, galleries and heritage organizations; Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts; over 100 festivals and events hosted annually; the OLG Casino Brantford; and that Brantford is designated the Tournament Capital of Ontario and home to world famous athletes including Wayne Gretzky; coupled with the professionalism and dedication of tourism businesses and community organizations and their workforce; and
WHEREAS tourism supports jobs which provide vital incomes for individuals, and families, and which serve as the economic lifeblood of communities across this country, including the Brantford area; and
WHEREAS tourism aids in community-building, contributes to a greater understanding of the community, the province of Ontario, Canada and its people, and gives Canadians access to an incredible variety of experiences right in their own backyards; and
WHEREAS the tourism industry makes a significant contribution to our standard of living and to the quality of life of all citizens; and
WHEREAS the week of May 14 to 20, 2012 is Tourism Awareness Week in Canada, the national celebration that highlights the economic impact and social benefits of Canada’s tourism sector among the media, general public and governments at all levels;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Brantford does hereby similarly recognize the economic impact and social benefits of the local tourism sector, and does hereby proclaim the week of May 14 to 20, 2012, as Tourism Awareness Week in Brantford, a celebration that will highlight the impact of the tourism industry in Brantford, Ontario, Canada.
