Watershed Conditions Statement: Water Safety Update

The Grand River watershed has received up to 70mm of rain in the past week. Flows in the Grand River and tributaries are running higher than normal for this time of year and are expected to stay high through the weekend. Further thunderstorm activity is forecast for Friday which will contribute additional runoff to the river. River flows downstream of large reservoirs (Conestogo, Shand, Guelph and Woolwich Dams) may change rapidly with dam operations over the new few days.

  • Recreational river users such as anglers, canoeists and kayakers should be aware of the higher flows.
  • Some low-lying areas along rivers could be flooded but there is no threat to communities.
  • Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are slippery and when combined with fast-moving water pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from watercourses.

Flows are expected to remain above normal summer levels throughout the weekend. GRCA staff will continue to monitor conditions and will update this message as warranted. This message is in effect until Monday, June 15, 2015.
