Construction Continues at the Gretzky Centre
With lots of activity on the construction site, the City of Brantford is anticipating even more significant changes to the Gretzky Centre property during the fall and winter months.
The first phase of construction is currently underway and we have already completed the following:
- removal of yellow rink
- removal of practice football field (to be replaced later in the project)
- removal of the tennis courts (replacement is pending funding)
- removal of 2 softball fields (other fields in city to be used in their place).
- below grade servicing for water and sewer
- electrical servicing
- development of parking lots and new entrances
- framing and exterior finishes for new 4-pad arena
- below grade work for new gymnasium
Work currently being completed on the site includes:
- interior electrical
- installation of arena refridgeration lines and equipment
- interior block work for arena dressing rooms, bleachers and offices
- rough in for restaurant lease space
- plumbing lines
- cement floors being poured
Once the new 4 pad is operational, the existing Red and Blue rinks will be torn down. This phase is to be completed by March 2011.
The second construction phase includes:
- a new 25m pool
- additional therapy pool
- new ground floor fitness centre
- new Sports Hall of Recognition
- new dryland training area
- new connecting hallways between the arenas and new entrances
- new landscaping
- new football field.
During the second phase of construction, the arenas and pool will be physically separated until construction is complete. The existing Olympic sized pool and warm water pool (teach pool) will remain as an extension of the new facility.
The project value is over $54 million with contributions made from all three levels of government.
The Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre will continue to be the #1 sports facility for the City of Brantford and
will increase opportunities for the Tournament Capital of Ontario!
