System Changes to Ontario Works
The Province of Ontario is installing a new computer system between Nov. 6 and 10, 2014 to deliver Ontario Works more effectively and efficiently. During this time, the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) will be available, but only updated to Nov. 5.
Online Applications are not available until Nov. 11. However, you can still apply by phone by calling 519-759-7009.

What is Ontario Works?
Ontario Works provides financial and employment assistance to individuals and families who are in need.
The Ontario Works Act provides the legislative framework for the provision of employment assistance and temporary financial assistance.
Its purpose is to:
- Recognize individual responsibility and promote self reliance through employment
- Provide temporary financial assistance to those in need while they meet obligations to become and stay employed
- Effectively serve people needing assistance
- Be accountable to the taxpayers of Ontario
Who is eligible for Ontario Works?
Residents of Ontario may apply for Ontario Works assistance. Eligibility for Ontario Works is based on an assessment of financial need and an agreement to participate in employment activities. You may also qualify for assistance if you are unable to work because of an illness and your physician verifies this by completing a medical form issued to you by your Case Manager.
Financial need is determined according to the number of people in your family, your income and assets, and shelter costs. To be eligible for Ontario Works, an applicant must be:
- a resident of Ontario;
- in immediate financial need; and,
- willing to participate in employment assistance activities.
Every person has the right to apply for assistance. Your eligibility will depend on your circumstances including your household income and assets. If your application is approved you will receive assistance as long as you remain eligible. You may be eligible for:
- funds for food, shelter, clothing and other household item;
- a monthly drug card to cover the cost of prescribed medication; or,
- other benefits such as dental services for children, prescription eyeglasses and transportation for medical reasons.
What is Employment Assistance?
Employment services play a critical role in helping individuals prepare for, connect with, and remain in the labour market. Ontario Works employment assistance helps people to become and stay employed.
How to Apply for OW
Apply By Telephone
Call 519-759-7009 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays excluding holidays.
The intake staff will ask for information such as your address, rent or shelter costs, income including support payments, loans, and insurance, bank account numbers and balances. Be prepared to provide identification, social insurance numbers, health card numbers and birth information for all family members.
If it appears that you have eligibility an interview will be scheduled with a Case Manager to complete the application process.
Visit the Ministry of Community & Social Services to start the online application for Social Assistance in a new browser window. You will be contacted by telephone within 24 hours and will need a telephone contact or call back within 5 days. Included is a screening section that can tell you whether or not you might be eligible before you start the application process. The online application is:
- Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Accessible for people with disabilities
- Available in English and French
Completing your monthly Income Report Statement
The Income Reporting Statement is due on the 16th of the month. The statement covers the period from the 16th of the previous month to the 15th of the current month.
All income boxes must be completed. If there is no income, write "NIL" in the box.
The Income Reporting Statement must be signed and dated. All members of the Benefit Unit over age 18 must sign the statement. The signatures must be dated on or after the 16th of the current month. Detailed instructions are available.
How can I get a replacement Income Report Statement?
A kiosk is available in the office at 220 Colborne Street in Brantford where you can print your own Income Reporting Statement. You will need your Member ID and your Case Manager's name. Your Member ID can be found on a previous cheque stub, drug or dental card, or any other Ontario Works correspondence.
You can also print your own blank IRS and complete all of the information yourself.
