What is Ontario Works?
Ontario Works provides financial and employment assistance to individuals and families who are in need.
The Ontario Works Act provides the legislative framework for the provision of employment assistance and temporary financial assistance.
Its purpose is to:
- Recognize individual responsibility and promote self reliance through employment
- Provide temporary financial assistance to those in need while they meet obligations to become and stay employed
- Effectively serve people needing assistance
- Be accountable to the taxpayers of Ontario
You may be eligible for additional financial supports to assist with your goals. You will need to speak with an Employment Coordinator or Case Manager to determine if you qualify for these supports.
Who is eligible for Ontario Works?
Residents of Ontario may apply for Ontario Works assistance. Eligibility for Ontario Works is based on an assessment of financial need and an agreement to participate in employment activities. You may also qualify for assistance if you are unable to work because of an illness and your physician verifies this by completing a medical form issued to you by your Case Manager.

The intake staff will ask for information such as your address, rent or shelter costs, income including support payments, loans, and insurance, bank account numbers and balances.
Be prepared to provide identification, social insurance numbers, health card numbers and birth information for all family members.
If it appears that you have eligibility an interview will be scheduled with a Case Manager to complete the application process.
