Rent Supplement Program

The Rent Supplement Program is one of a variety of programs that are administered by city of Brantford Housing in order to provide affordable housing to low income families and individuals in Brantford and Brant County. Under this program, rent is subsidized in privately owned buildings through an agreement with City of Brantford.

Rent Supplement tenants are selected from the waiting list that is managed by Housing to ensure fairness in wait times. Tenants who move into rent supplement units sign a standard lease with the landlord of the private building, so the normal landlord-tenant relationship exists. The landlord collects rent, maintains the building and provides the same services and repairs that exists with all other tenants in the building.

Tenants in the Rent Supplement program pay a rent that is based on their income.  Housing supplements the tenant’s rent by paying the landlord the difference between the rent paid by the tenant and the full market rent for the unit. Each year, Housing reviews the rents charged by the landlords to ensure that they fairly reflect the market rents in the area.

On average, there are more than 300 Rent Supplement units under administration in the region of Brant & Brant County.

Rent Supplement Landlord Application Process

Private landlords interested in this program must complete a Rent Supplement Landlord Application Form and submit it to the Housing Department. Click here for a copy of the Landlord Application Form.  Private landlords will need to provide the following information:

  • Type of building
  • Number of units
  • Age of building
  • Unit size
  • Monthly rent

City of Brantford Housing selects units for the Rent Supplement Program based on available funds, need, local priorities, new construction targets, market rent and the demand for accessible units. High priced units, or units that offer luxury accommodation and amenities, will not be considered.

Before an application is approved, units are inspected and rents are negotiated. When the application is approved, the landlord enters into a Rent Supplement Agreement with City of Brantford Housing.
