Housing Services
Mission Statement:
Dedicated to providing a range of housing needs and supports with a focus on dignity, pride in community and self-sufficiency.
About Us:
Welcome to the City of Brantford’s Housing Department.
We are dedicated to working hard every day to put together some of the most effective housing programs, aimed at getting our clients into the housing that they need.
Recently we introduced the B-Home Program (Brantford Home Ownership Made Easier), a program designed to get renters into their first home. With the help of funding from senior levels of government, we managed to issue down-payment assistance to 84 families who otherwise would not have been able to purchase a home. Watch for more information on the extension of this program in 2010.
On the development side, we are focused on producing new innovative projects with affordable rents. This is a priority and is made available through funding partnerships with the provincial government and CMHC. These developments are often a real catalyst for change in neighbourhoods simply because of their ability to transform older buildings that have been under utilized, into vibrant new residential complexes. A number of new projects have recently opened with more projects on schedule to open in 2010.
The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance, Garden Suites, and HASI (Home Adaptations for Senior’s Independence) programs provide valuable assistance to homeowners with limited incomes who cannot afford to do critical repairs to their homes. Funding for these programs and our homelessness initiatives has been renewed by CMHC so these programs look solid at least another five years.
For tenants in Social Housing we continue to upgrade our buildings with additional capital funding provided by the federal and provincial governments. The focus of these projects is on structural issues as well as energy efficient upgrades to our building systems. These programs work to restore confidence in the economy by creating employment opportunities for our citizens.
Finally, we are responsible for the administration of approximately 2100 housing units in Brantford and Brant County. The department directly manages approximately 1200 of these units and administers an additional 842 units. The department provides rent supplements to approximately 300 other households within the City of Brantford and County of Brant.
