PARIS, ON: The City of Brantford and the County of Brant today officially celebrated the grand opening of 174 Trillium Way, a new affordable housing development providing 49 one- and two-bedroom units for singles, couples, small families, and seniors. The project is a key deliverable of the Mayors’ Housing Partnerships Task Force Affordable Housing Action Plan, a joint initiative between the City of Brantford and the County of Brant to address the urgent need for affordable housing in the region. At present, more than 1,100 households are on the centralized housing waitlist, with over 65 per cent seeking one or two-bedroom units.

Developed in partnership with Brantford Native Housing, Nova Vita, and Sensity, and built by VERLY Construction Group, 174 Trillium Way is net-zero energy ready, designed for optimal efficiency and long-term sustainability.

“We are incredibly happy and grateful to everyone who has played a role in bringing this project to life,” said County of Brant Mayor David Bailey. “This marks a meaningful step forward in expanding access to affordable housing - something we know is urgently needed in our communities. Access to safe and secure housing is something that everyone deserves. We extend our sincere thanks to the City of Brantford for its continued support of social services for County residents.”

“This development is an example of what we can achieve when we work together to tackle one of the greatest challenges facing our community,” said City of Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live. For our new residents, this is more than just a building, it’s the foundation for a better future. I’ve heard first-hand from tenants how life-changing it is to feel secure, close to family, and able to plan rather than just survive day-to-day. That is the real impact of 174 Trillium Way.”

The building is already changing lives for its residents. One tenant shared that before moving in, rent consumed nearly all their fixed income, leaving little for food or medical needs. “It’s a huge relief to finally have a safe, affordable home where I can be close to my family and plan for the future,” they said. They described feeling a renewed sense of safety and security, and the freedom to make longer-term plans rather than living month-to-month. They also expressed gratitude to the City and County for building a visually beautiful home and praised the Housing Operations staff for making the move-in process welcoming and easy.

Another tenant, Gord, explained that high rent and utility costs had left him “hardly getting by,” especially after serious health issues and the loss of a loved one. Being accepted at 174 Trillium Way allowed him to reconnect with his family and gain peace of mind knowing his accessibility and health needs are now met. “I have a fresh start in life and a new lease on life as they say. After I got my keys, I took a moment by myself to soak it all in. It is what I needed, and it all just kind of hit me then,” he said. Gord called the building “stunning, from the minute you walk in the door.”
