Smoke Alarm Pledge

Do you want to win freezies for your entire school? How about experiencing a Hot Summer Nights event with Brantford Fire to celebrate the end of your school year? All you have to do is take the smoke alarm pledge!

It’s simple. Talk to your family about the smoke alarms in your home – how many there are and where they are located. Make sure they are installed where required and test them to ensure they are working properly. Then take the pledge below! The elementary school with the highest number of student pledges, will win freezies for their entire school and host a Hot Summer Nights event at the end of the school year.

Did you know that the Ontario Fire Code requires smoke alarms on every level and outside each sleeping area as a minimum? You may require more alarms, depending on the type of building you live in and when it was built. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to make sure the following requirements are met:

  • Purchase alarms that bear a certification marking from an authorized testing laboratory.
  • Install and maintain working smoke alarms, at minimum, on every level of the home (including the basement) and outside of sleeping areas.
  • Test alarms once per month to ensure they are in working order.
  • Check the date. Smoke alarms expire approximately every ten years. Check the back or side of the alarm to see if it is time for a new one, even if they are hardwired.
  • Conduct annual maintenance on all alarms. Vacuum them once per year and change the batteries twice per year, if applicable.
