City of Brantford invites residents to Waste Discovery Day at the landfill
BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford invites residents to Waste Discovery Day: From Curb to Landfill on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mohawk Street Landfill, located at 20 Morrison Rd, Brantford. This free event features plenty of activities for kids of all ages, including a bouncy castle, face painting, arts and crafts, and games. It’s also an opportunity for residents to learn about the importance of proper waste disposal in building a more sustainable future. Free parking is available on-site.
Attendees will also have the chance to take part in a free guided tour of the landfill, where they can explore behind the scenes of waste disposal, meet with knowledgeable staff, and ask questions. Educational booths will be set up so residents can learn how waste is handled, how recycling and green bin use makes an impact, and what residents can do to reduce their environmental footprint.
The City of Brantford is currently developing a Solid Waste Management Master Plan to help determine how waste is collected, managed and reduced in our community over the next 25 years. The Plan’s main target is to increase the City’s waste diversion rate from 34 per cent to at least 70 per cent by 2050. This means finding significant ways to reduce the amount of waste that ends up at the landfill by encouraging residents and businesses to practice methods such as reducing waste, repurposing items and participating in the City’s recycling and green bin programs. How to help reduce waste
- By properly sorting waste into the Green Bin, Blue Boxes and other diversion programs, 51 per cent of Brantford's garbage could be kept out of the landfill.
- About 36 per cent of waste is food related. By participating in the City's Green Bin program, greenhouse gases can be removed from the landfill.
- As part of a provincial effort beginning in 2025, the City’s Blue Box program has shifted to the responsibility of product producers. Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization, aims to enhance Ontario’s Blue Box program by standardizing acceptable materials across the province in 2026.
