City of Brantford recognized as an Age-Friendly Community

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Branford has been officially recognized by the Government of Ontario as an Age-Friendly Community. The award celebrates the City’s commitment to providing accessible, inclusive supports and services that enhance the quality of life of older Brantford residents.

The award was presented at the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Recognition Ceremony on January 18, 2026 during the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conference. Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis accepted the award celebrating Brantford’s achievements towards making Ontario more accessible and inclusive for people of all ages and abilities.

"I am incredibly proud to accept this award on behalf of the City of Brantford,” says Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “Ensuring people of all ages and abilities have opportunities to thrive in our community is a key priority for Brantford. I applaud City staff and our community partners’ ongoing efforts to support our aging population through social participation, civic pride and better overall mental and physical well-being.”

City of Brantford’s Age-Friendly Priorities

This recognition follows Brantford City Council’s recent approval of the Healthy Aging Strategy 2025-2027, that outlines 20 new priority actions to continue building on Brantford’s successes of being age-friendly, including:

  • Installation of additional pedestrian crossing signals, curb cuts and tactile warning indicators.
  • Ongoing improvements to light levels and energy efficiency of street lighting.
  • Implement Phase 2 of the Brantford Transit Moving Forward Plan.
  • Free Seniors Month activities throughout June.

Since first launching the Healthy Aging Strategy in 2018, the City has accomplished a lot to date, including but not limited to: an increase in kilometres of paved paths and sidewalks, a fully accessible fleet, an increase to the number of transit stops with shelters, various facility upgrades, more affordable housing units and ongoing community services provided at affordable seniors housing sites, and more older adults participating in recreational and social programming.

The City of Brantford has also been internationally recognized by the World Health Organization as an Age-Friendly community in 2017 and has since received awards from the Ministry of Seniors Affairs recognizing our ongoing efforts to building an age-friendly community.
