Brant’s Crossing Bridge Replacement Project update
BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is advancing to a key phase of the Brant’s Crossing Bridge Replacement Project with a significant milestone: the existing bridge will be lifted out using one of the largest mobile cranes in North America. Spanning more than 185 feet high when fully assembled, the Tadano CC38.650 crane will carefully remove each of the four existing bridge spans. The concrete bridge piers and abutments will remain in place to support the construction of the new pedestrian bridge. Once complete, the new bridge will revitalize the area and restore an important connection that is well used by the community.
Sierra Bridge Inc., the contractor carrying out this project, is coordinating the project with their subcontractor(s) in preparation for the safe removal of the superstructure in the weeks ahead.
For public safety, Brant’s Crossing Bridge, Brant’s Crossing Park, Fordview Park, and all fenced construction areas continue to remain closed to the public throughout this phase. Pedestrians and cyclists are reminded to respect all closures and detour signage. Alternative routes include the Lorne Bridge to the north and the TH&B Bridge near Earl Haig Family Fun Park to the south.
The City of Brantford appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as this work progresses. Construction is anticipated to continue until spring 2026.
Brant’s Crossing Bridge, which spans the Grand River and connects Fordview Park and Brant’s Crossing Park, has long served as an important community link. Originally constructed in 1875 for railway traffic and replaced in 1913, the bridge was converted for pedestrian and cyclist use in 1996. In 2018, ice damage resulted in its temporary closure until repairs were completed in late 2021.
In 2022, the City completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment that recommended replacing and raising the bridge to improve flood resilience and safety, while providing a wider deck, lighting, and lookout features to enhance the Grand River crossing experience, linking the Hub of Ontario Trails.
