City reminds residents how to prepare for potential flood risks
BRANTFORD, ON – Residents are reminded that there is an elevated risk of flooding during this time of year when conditions are favourable for increased runoff from rapid snowmelt and rainfall that can be blocked by ice jams. On January 6, the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) issued a Flood Watch and Flood Outlook Statement for Brantford, indicating that mild and wet weather is expected to impact the watershed later this week as active weather systems move through the area. It is important for residents and property owners, especially those located near the river to be as prepared as possible for potential flooding.
Helpful reminders for property owners:
- For informational purposes, the City of Brantford offers an online mapping tool that shows if a property is in a flood zone or within the floodplain.
- Property owners and residents in flood-prone areas should have an emergency plan, ensuring they have quick access to essential belongings, in case an evacuation is necessary.
- Updates will be provided through official City of Brantford and GRCA communication channels. Residents are encouraged to sign up for GRCA flood notifications at grandriver.ca/subscribe and updates from the City of Brantford at Brantford.ca/subscribe.
- Banks of the Grand River and local creeks are slippery, and fast-moving, cold water poses a serious hazard. Parents are urged to keep children and pets away from the riverbanks.
- Should flooding occur, certain roads, trails, and pathways may be closed. Residents are advised to follow all posted signs and avoid water-covered areas.
The City is fully prepared to respond if an emergency arises and will continue working closely with our partners to assess conditions. For more information on flood preparedness, visit Brantford.ca/Flooding and the GRCA website at grandriver.ca.
