City of Brantford promotes “Shop Local” message this holiday season

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is encouraging residents to support local businesses throughout the holiday season. Small businesses, including locally owned franchises, have a significant impact on Brantford’s economy and contribute to the charm and vibrancy of our community. According to economic data, every dollar spent at a small business keeps 66 cents in the local economy, compared to just 11 cents when spent at a multinational retailer.
“Shopping local has a meaningful and measurable impact,” says Mae Legg, Manager of Economic Development, City of Brantford. “Each time you choose to support a local business, you’re giving twice, once to your loved one and once to the community.”
For many small businesses, the holiday season is when local support means the most. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business reported that 33 per cent of Canadian small businesses count on holiday sales, and compared to last year, one in five small businesses expect lower revenue this year, while just over half anticipate flat sales.
Residents can support small businesses in a variety of meaningful ways, whether by shopping in-store or online, purchasing gift cards, or leaving a positive review on Google or social media. As part of this campaign, the City of Brantford is inviting residents to share photos of their favourite small businesses in Brantford and upload them to the contest page at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/SupportLocal before the deadline on December 16, 2025. Each photo uploaded will count as one entry, and participants will be entered into a draw to win one of four “Shop Local” prize packages valued at $125 each.
Residents are encouraged to visit www.discoverbrantford.ca/ShopLocalHoliday for more details on how they can support local businesses this holiday season and year-round.
