Committee of the Whole to consider comprehensive review of City’s Purchasing Policy
BRANTFORD, ON: As Brantford faces heightened economic uncertainty due to newly imposed U.S. tariffs, City Council is taking decisive action to strengthen local economic resilience. At a Committee of the Whole meeting tomorrow, Councillors will consider a resolution brought forward by Councillor Rose Sicoli calling for a comprehensive review of the City’s Purchasing Policy, with a focus on supporting Canadian businesses.
With a 25% tariff on various Canadian imports in effect, Councillor Sicoli’s resolution seeks to explore a “Canada-First” procurement approach, prioritize local vendor participation, and ensure City spending directly benefits the local economy.
“As we navigate the impacts of these tariffs, we need to take every possible step to protect Brantford’s economy,” said Councillor Sicoli. “This policy review will ensure that our procurement strategy not only reflects the principles of fairness and transparency but also prioritizes our local businesses and workers.”
The resolution calls for a review of internal spending limits, the City’s approved vendor list, and new methods to increase local business participation while maintaining compliance with trade agreements.
Mayor Kevin Davis has also emphasized the urgency of the situation, working closely with Brantford’s largest employers and collaborating with the Big City Mayors’ Caucus to mitigate the local impact of tariffs. The City’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local procurement strategies build on the work of the Municipal Working Group on Trade and Procurement, established by Mayor Davis last month to assess the impact of U.S. tariffs and develop a municipal response. The Working Group’s findings have already led to key recommendations, including advocating for local businesses in trade discussions, implementing a “Buy Canadian” approach, and strengthening economic resilience through municipal purchasing policies.
