Contractor fined for violating open-air burning permit requirements

BRANTFORD, ON – A contractor was fined $2,500 under the Fire Protection & Prevention Act, as a result of a fire at 251 Powerline Road that occurred on March 18, 2026.

Aiden Robert Tuite, a contractor hired by the property owner, pleaded guilty to an Ontario Fire Code offence in Provincial Offences Court on Apil 23, 2026. The contractor failed to follow the approved procedures for an open-air burning permit he obtained.

The Brantford Fire Department reminds property and business owners that open air burning is typically not permitted within the City of Brantford. Permits to allow open-air burning on agricultural, commercial and industrial properties in the boundary adjustment area require inspection and approval by Brantford’s Fire Prevention Division. Failure to obtain an approved burn permit or follow the requirements of an approved burn permit, can result in sizeable fines.
