City reminds residents of fireworks safety leading up to Canada Day (1)

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford and the Brantford Fire Department remind residents that this year, the use of fireworks is permitted on Canada Day and the three calendar days leading up to the holiday (June 28, 29, 30 and July 1, 2026) as long as they meet the safety requirements and bylaw restrictions. Due to the specific nature of fireworks, most properties in the City of Brantford do not meet the size criteria required for safe fireworks displays.

Key restrictions

  • Fireworks are not permitted in City parks or on any City streets.
  • Fireworks may only be discharged on private property, provided the area meets the required safety zone.
  • Written permission from the property owner is required if you are not the owner of the property where fireworks are discharged, or the property where fireworks debris is landing.

Critical requirements

  • The fallout zone must be twice the height of the fireworks in all directions. Ensure your space is adequate before proceeding.
  • Fireworks must be discharged between sunset and 11 p.m. on June 28, 29, 30 and July 1, 2026.
  • No public spaces, including City parks or any City streets can be used for fireworks displays.
  • Fireworks must be set off in calm weather conditions and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Ensure a means of extinguishment is close by, and all debris is properly cleaned up to prevent fire hazards.

Misuse of fireworks

If the Brantford Fire Department is dispatched due to unsafe fireworks use, you may be charged for the cost of the response under the City’s Fees and Charges By-law. Additionally, fines may apply for non-compliance with the Fireworks By-law.

If you notice that unsanctioned fireworks displays are being set off in City of Brantford parks or on City property or roadways, please call the City of Brantford By-law Department at 519-759-4150. If you notice that fireworks are being set off in a manner that is a fire hazard (i.e. falling on neighbouring roofs, unsafe use), please contact the Brantford Fire Department by calling 9-1-1.

New fireworks regulations effective January 2027
At their meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Brantford City Council approved a city-wide ban on the use of consumer fireworks in Brantford effective January 2027. Under the new By-law, personal fireworks use will no longer be permitted, however, organizations, community and religious groups will still be able to host sanctioned fireworks displays by applying for a permit through the Brantford Fire Department and fulfilling the requirement to hire a properly licensed fireworks company to run the fireworks display. The decision followed public engagement on fireworks use in Brantford, including a community survey completed by 802 respondents. Of those who participated, 66 per cent raised concerns about fireworks-related noise, public safety, and impacts on wildlife and the environment.

A comprehensive education campaign will be shared publicly well in advance of the new regulations taking effect in January 2027.
