City enhances downtown safety with new code blue emergency phones

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford has installed two code blue emergency phones in Harmony Square at 89 Dalhousie Street to improve access to emergency assistance and strengthen public safety. Code blue phones provide an immediate connection to emergency services, allowing users to quickly report medical emergencies, public safety concerns or unlawful activity.

“The code blue emergency phones make it easier for people to access help when they need it,” says Brandon Partridge, Supervisor of Surveillance, City of Brantford. “Whether someone is experiencing a medical emergency, feels unsafe or witnesses unlawful activity, these phones provide a simple and reliable way to connect with emergency services.”

Following a meeting with Wilfrid Laurier University Brantford Campus and Brantford Police Services, security statistics found that a number of individuals requiring assistance were without a cell phone. Due to a lack of payphones in the downtown, the City was asked to investigate installing code blue emergency phones.  

The installation of the code blue emergency phones is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety in the downtown while supporting a welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors. The emergency phones will work in hand with the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system already in place at Harmony Square while supporting the planned expansion of the City’s downtown security infrastructure.

Misuse of the phones for non-emergency purposes can result in charges of Common Nuisance under the Criminal Code of Canada.
