City launches Golden Green Bin contest

BRANTFORD, ON – City of Brantford residents who regularly participate in the green bin program are invited to nominate themselves or their neighbours for the Golden Green Bin Contest. A winner will randomly be selected from each ward and receive a gold star decal for their green bin with a $100 gift card to a local grocery store of their choice.

“We are incredibly proud of the success Brantford’s Green Bin program has had and are excited to celebrate the outstanding residents who are making an environmentally conscious effort in how they manage their waste,” says Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “When organic waste is placed in the green bin, it not only reduces the amount of greenhouse gas being produced, it also significantly reduces the amount of waste ending up at the landfill.”

Brantford residents can enter the Golden Green Bin contest by completing the online submission form at Brantford.ca/GoldenGreenBin. To be eligible you must regularly participate in Brantford’s Green Bin program and City staff will randomly verify participation from households entered into the contest. The contest is open until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30. The winners will be announced on November 4, 2026, coinciding with the three-year anniversary of the green bin program.

Since the launch of the green bin program, residents have collectively diverted over 6,000 tonnes of organic waste from the Mohawk Street Landfill. The City of Brantford is currently developing a Solid Waste Management Master Plan that aims to increase the City’s waste diversion rate from 34 per cent to at least 70 per cent by 2050 in an effort to extend the lifespan of Brantford’s landfill. This means finding significant ways to reduce the amount of waste that ends up at the landfill by encouraging residents and businesses to practice methods such as reducing waste, repurposing items and participating in the City’s recycling and green bin programs.
