City of Brantford crews ready for winter weather

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford’s winter maintenance crews are prepared for the coming winter season. Plows and salt trucks have been serviced and are ready for deployment, and crews are prepared to respond to snow and ice throughout the winter.

Ahead of a storm, City staff monitor weather conditions closely and apply anti-icing materials to high-priority routes as needed. Residents are encouraged to park off-street whenever possible to give plows and salters the space they need to operate safely and efficiently. Parking is prohibited on designated snow routes during Winter Events. Vehicles parked on snow routes may be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

During a Winter Event, roads are cleared and treated in priority order. The City maintains nearly 1,400 lane kilometres of roadway through its Red, Blue and Green route system:

  • Red Routes (Arterial Roads): Plowing begins at 5 cm of accumulation and is typically completed within six hours after a storm ends.
  • Blue Routes (Collector Roads): Plowing begins at 8 cm of accumulation and is typically completed within 12 hours.
  • Green Routes (Residential Roads): Plowing begins at 8 cm of accumulation and is generally completed within 16 hours.

Once a storm ends, crews continue city-wide snow clearing and removal operations. This includes snow removal in the Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA), clearing sidewalks fronting City-owned properties and facilities, municipal parking lots, signalized intersections, pedestrian crossings and bike lanes. Crews also continue clean-up on major routes, bridges and underpasses.

Property owners and occupants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of a Winter Event.

Once the snow stops falling, the City activates a 24-hour clock to allow crews to focus on city-wide snow clearing and clean-up. During this time, individual customer service requests for snow clearing are temporarily paused. Once a snow-free 24-hour period has passed, staff resume responding to individual concerns and service requests in priority order.
