Garbage and Recycling

Winter collection tips

With snow and high winds expected throughout the winter season, here are some reminders when setting out garbage and recycling during winter weather conditions:

  • Place the heaviest recycling items on the top of lighter materials to help keep materials from blowing out of your blue box
  • Place boxboard or cardboard items vertically in your blue box instead of laying them flat
  • If snow or heavy winds are expected overnight, wait until just before 7:00 a.m. on your collection day to place blue boxes and garbage at the curb
  • Keep recyclables below the rim of the blue box (additional blue boxes can be picked up at the City’s Mohawk Street Landfill site)
  • Use garbage bags instead of a garbage bin or cans so containers do not blow around once they are emptied
  • Do not use white-coloured garbage bags
  • Clear a spot for your blue boxes and garbage that is free of snow and easy for collectors to see
  • Don't place your waste bins or bags on top of or behind snowbanks
  • Place your waste containers on the left side at the end of your driveway (facing the street)
  • If you do not have a driveway, place waste containers on the boulevard closest to the curb
  • If there is no boulevard, place containers on the left side at the end of your walkway (facing the street)

Download Recycle Coach

Keep the City of Brantford clean by disposing of household waste properly. Download and use the free City of Brantford Recycle Coach app to see what goes where and when in your neighbourhood.

There are important changes being made to your collection! Beginning in Spring 2021, Spring/Summer Yard Waste collection will now take place every other week (bi-weekly). To see this change reflected on your Recycle Coach collection calendar, you must re-enter your address on your mobile device following these steps:

  1. Open the app
  2. Click on Menu
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Click on Address / Zone
  5. Re-enter your Address

All garbage and recycling materials should be set out at the curb for collection by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, and not before 7:00 p.m. the night before.

Household curbside pick up

Residents can set out up to five containers or bags of garbage each week. Each container must weigh less than 25 kg (55 lbs). Your garbage must be to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, but not before 7:00 p.m. the night before.

There are no changes to waste collection on most holidays. Your waste collection will occur one day later than regularly scheduled if it falls on or after these holidays: Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). Use the Recycle Coach app and never miss another collection. With the easy-to-use calendar you can find your upcoming collection schedule simply by searching your home address.

Yard waste program

We provide yard waste collection throughout the spring, summer and fall (April-November). Check the collection schedule before putting out yard waste.

Bulk item pick up

Residents cannot put furniture, appliances or other bulk items out for collection with their regular household garbage. A free pick up service is available once between the months of January to June, and once between the months of July to December.

With seven days' notice, a resident can schedule a bulk item pick up online.

This service is not available to business locations that receive regular curbside garbage collection.

Recycling

The blue box recycling program is available to all Brantford residents. Replacement blue boxes are available if boxes are broken, lost or stolen. There is a limit of one per year if needed and at the discretion of the City.

Please do not bag your recyclables. Leave items loose and empty in your recycling bins.

Landfill

Residents of the City of Brantford are encouraged to use the Mohawk Street Landfill Site to dispose of any waste not accepted during weekly curbside collection.

Household hazardous waste

Household hazardous waste can pose a serious health risk if disposed of improperly. Household hazardous waste days take place at the Mohawk Street Landfill Site.
