Business licensing process

Most businesses in the City must be licensed by the City of Brantford to operate legally. We require business licences to help ensure the safety of our citizens and your customers. The City issues licences for both stationary businesses and some mobile businesses including:

Regulations

A number of regulations must be met when you apply for a business licence. Your application will be circulated for signatures from required departments and agencies like building, zoning, police and fire. The Brant County Health Unit must also approve certain applications like:

  • Food premises
  • Food service vehicle
  • Lodging homes
  • Personal service setting
  • Public halls
  • Temporary sales (food sales only)
How to apply
To apply for a business licence you need the following:
  • Business licence application completed by either an individual owner, a partner or the president or signing officer of the corporation (see below for category specific forms)
  • A criminal record check (if required)
  • Completed inspections of your location by Police, Fire, Building Services and/or Public Health (if required)
  • Licensing fee
By-laws
Business licensing by-laws help enforcement officers protect the community against infractions related to:
  • Public health and safety
  • Nuisance control
  • Consumer protection

Visit our by-law page to view a list of our business-related by-laws.

Licensing fees
Licensing fees offset the cost of the related enforcement and inspection programs. The cost of administering and enforcing licensing regulations should be covered by the regulated trades and not the public. Fees vary by type of business licence.
Licence renewals
You can renew your business licence at City Hall. The City issues business licence renewal letters in early February. Once you receive this letter, please send a cheque payable to the City of Brantford addressed to:

City Clerk's Department

100 Wellington Square

Brantford, ON N3T 5R7

We also accept renewals in person at the City Clerk's office located on the first floor of City Hall. The City Clerk's office accepts payments made by cash, cheque, visa, mastercard or debit card.

Licensing help
If you have any questions or need help, contact the City Clerk’s department at 519-759-4150 or by email before submitting your business licence application or starting your business. We are happy to help you with the application process.
