Development Charges

Development charges are adjusted annually and assist in financial capital projects required to meet the increased need for services resulting from growth and development. Development charges must be made prior to a building permit being issued. Please refer to our list of current development charges.

Development Charges Background Study

The Development Charges Background Study:

  • Prepares a growth forecast and capital program needed to service this growth.
  • Calculates development charges consistent with the Development Charges Act, 1997 (DCA) and its associated Regulation.
  • Reviews current Development Charges policies and develops new develop charges by-law(s) and policies which conform to the DCA

2018/2019 Development Charges Background Study

In accordance with the requirements of the Development Charges Act, 1997, the City’s current development charges by-law is in force and effect for a period of five years and will expire on March 26, 2024. The Development Charges Background Study is available for review online and in-person at City Hall.

Passing of Development Charges Bylaw 32-2019

The Council of the Corporation of the City of Brantford passed Development Charges Bylaw 32-2019  March 26, 2019 pursuant to the Development Charges Act, 1997 and was adopted as Chapter 261 of the City of Brantford Municipal Code. Any person or organization may appeal to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT) under Section 14 of the Act, in respect of the development charges by-law, by filing with the Clerk of the City of Brantford on or before the 5th day of May, 2019, a notice of appeal setting out the object to the by-law and the reasons supporting the objecting. Annual Reporting

In accordance with Article 9 of Chapter 261 of the City of Brantford Municipal Code, the Treasurer shall annually present a financial statement to City Council regarding the development charges reserve funds. Review the 2017 Development Charges Reserve Fund Continuity Report
