Fireworks By-law

The Fireworks by-law regulates the sale, use and safety of fireworks in the City of Brantford.

It helps ensure fireworks are used safely, at appropriate times, and in a way that protects people, property and the community.

General rule

Fireworks may be used, but only on specific dates and under the rules outlined below.

Firecrackers (such as loud explosive items like cherry bombs, M‑80s and similar noise‑making devices) are not allowed in Brantford, and cannot be sold or used.

Types of fireworks

The by-law separates fireworks into two main types:

Consumer fireworks

These are the fireworks sold to the public for recreational use, such as:

  • sparklers
  • fountains
  • Roman candles
  • small aerial fireworks

These are allowed, but only under strict rules.

Display fireworks

These are larger, high‑hazard fireworks used for public displays and events.

  • A permit from the City is required
  • They must be supervised by a qualified fireworks supervisor

When you can set off fireworks

Residents may only use consumer fireworks (the types sold to the public) on specific dates.

Permitted occasions

Fireworks are allowed only on:

  • Victoria Day, and the three days before
  • Canada Day, and the three days before
  • Diwali
  • Lunar New Year
  • Other dates approved by the City, such as through special approval by the Fire Department

Permitted time

On the days listed above, fireworks may only be used between sunset and 11:00 p.m.

Fireworks are not allowed on regular days outside of these approved dates, unless specifically authorized by the City.

Where you can use fireworks

You may only set off fireworks:

  • on your own property, or
  • on someone else’s property with the owner’s permission (written permission is required)

You must also ensure that debris does not land on neighbouring properties without permission.

Safety rules

Fireworks must only be used in safe weather conditions and handled responsibly at all times.

You must:

  • follow all manufacturer instructions
  • have a way to extinguish fires, such as water or a fire extinguisher
  • fully extinguish all fireworks and debris after use

Do not use fireworks:

  • in strong wind, rain, fog or other unsafe conditions
  • during a drought or fire ban
  • in a way that creates a nuisance, such as excessive noise, smoke or safety risks

Children and fireworks

Fireworks must be stored safely and kept out of reach of children.

  • Only people eighteen years of age or older may handle and set off fireworks
  • Children may use sparklers only under direct adult supervision

Selling fireworks

Fireworks may only be sold during limited times including the days leading up to each holiday.

Fireworks cannot be sold:

  • to anyone under eighteen
  • at locations that sell fuel

Fireworks must also be stored and displayed safely.

Display fireworks (events and shows)

Large fireworks displays require a permit from the City and must meet strict safety requirements, including:

  • a site plan
  • trained supervision
  • insurance coverage
  • proper safety distances
  • fire protection measures

Enforcement and penalties

If this by-law is not followed:

  • fines may apply under the Provincial Offences Act
  • you may be charged for Fire Department response costs if emergency services are required due to unsafe use

Before using fireworks

Before using fireworks, make sure you understand and follow the key rules below:

  • Firecrackers are not allowed at any time
  • Fireworks are only permitted on specific dates
  • Only use fireworks between sunset and 11:00 p.m.
  • Use fireworks safely and follow all instructions
