Energy Management

The City of Brantford is dedicated to corporate energy conservation and environmental sustainability. Energy is essential to the operation of the City’s buildings, services and production of water and treatment of wastewater. Facilities Management staff work closely with all City departments to identify energy-saving opportunities, investigate and implement cost effective energy retrofit projects throughout City facilities, and capitalize on rebate and grant-funding programs.

Corporate Energy Management Plan

Ontario Regulation 25/23: Broader Public Sector: Energy Reporting and Conservation and Demand Management Plans, under the Electricity Act (1998), requires municipalities to develop and publish an Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan every five years.

City Council received the City of Brantford CEMP on May 28, 2024.

The objectives of the CEMP are to achieve the following:

1. Foster a corporate commitment to energy efficiency.
2. Improve energy data and management processes.
3. Improve capital asset systems to reduce energy use and cost.
4. Demonstrate leadership in energy and GHG management.
5. The City meets and exceeds the requirements of Regulation 25/23.

The CEMP establishes the following 5-year targets to guide the City’s efforts from 2024 to 2028:

• 10% reduction in energy intensity consumption;
• 25% reduction in GHG emissions

The City of Brantford CEMP is required to be updated every five (5) years.

Annual Energy Management Reporting

Pursuant to this regulation, the City is required to provide information about energy use within City facilities including a summary of annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as well as current and proposed energy conservation and demand management measures.
