Energy Management

The City of Brantford is dedicated to corporate energy conservation and environmental sustainability. Energy is essential to the operation of the City’s buildings, services and production of water and treatment of wastewater. Facilities Management staff work closely with all City departments to identify energy-saving opportunities, investigate and implement cost effective energy retrofit projects throughout City facilities, and capitalize on rebate and grant-funding programs.

Corporate Energy Management Plan

Ontario Regulation 507/18, made under the Electricity Act, 1998 was revised and published in December 2018 to supplant Ontario Regulation 397/11, made under the Green Energy Act, 2009. This Regulation requires that all public agencies prepare an Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan also known as a Corporate Energy Management Plan (CEMP).

City Council endorsed the City of Brantford CEMP 2019-2024 on June 25, 2019.

The objectives of the CEMP are to achieve the following:

Energy will be used efficiently within the City.
A corporate structure is established to manage energy efficiently.
The efficient use of energy is a priority for the City in corporate policy and budget decisions.
The efficient use of energy is part of the day-to-day activities of City staff.
The City meets and exceeds the requirements of Regulation 507/18.

The CEMP establishes the following 5-year targets to guide the City’s efforts from 2019 to 2024:

2.4 ekWh/ft² reduction in energy intensity;
2.8% reduction in energy use; and
7.3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

The City of Brantford CEMP 2019–2024 is required to be updated every five (5) years and next published by July 1, 2024.

Annual Energy Management Reporting

Pursuant to this regulation, the City is required to provide information about energy use within City facilities including a summary of annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions as well as current and proposed energy conservation and demand management measures.
