Community Better Challenge

Throughout the month of June, we encourage everyone in the community to join the Community Better Challenge, and to get moving and track your progress. Sponsored by ParticipACTION, this challenge runs June 1 to June 30, 2021 and the winner will be named Canada’s Most Active Community and awarded $100,000 towards local physical activity initiatives!

How to get active and take part in this challenge

  • Download the ParticipACTION App through the App Store or Google Play, or join using the ParticipACTION website and track your physical activity, including gardening, playing at the park with your kids, or going for a walk or run with your pooch. Be sure tap on “Join the Community Challenge”, so that when you enter your postal code, your minutes will support the overall community score. You can even set up a family account to track all your minutes in once place and you can sync it with your smart watch too!
  • Create a “Team” using the App and encourage your family, friends or colleagues to join your team and get moving. May the best mover win!
  • Join a free outdoor activity to keep you moving! The City of Brantford, in partnership with local organizations, is running a variety of free outdoor fitness activities that you can join. All fitness classes will be led by a certified Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer from the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre. There is something for all ages and experience levels. We will track and submit the minutes for your participACTION in these acitivities. Find a class below.

Weekly in- person outdoor activities

Pre-registration is required for each in-person activity. Registration numbers will be limited in order to comply with provincial health regulations. If the activity you want to register for is full, join the waitlist and you will be notified if a spot becomes available. Please note that programs may be cancelled as a result of inclement weather.

Yoga in the Park (13 years and over)

Safe, low-impact poses and sequences to improve balance, strength, and flexibility, while decreasing stress and improving overall wellness. No experience necessary; many options provided for all levels and abilities. You will need to bring your own mat with you for each class.

Mindful Movement (13 years and over)

Here is a great way to slow down and improve your fitness-both at the same time! Fitness does not have to be fast and intense to be effective, so give this class a try and you will agree. Through body weight movements, this class will challenge your strength and flexibility, as well as your improve balance, coordination and focus. It is a great class for everyone-from new exercisers to people always on the go who are looking for a way to slow down.

Full Body Fit (13 years and over)

Here is a great full body work out that will use your body weight and light equipment. You will get a great cardio challenge, resistance sets, and stretching. All this and more in just one work-out! Bring your own yoga mat please.

Young at Heart in the Park (50 years and over)

Using bodyweight and an exercise band (which will be yours to keep!), this program will offer you ways to challenge and improve your balance, coordination, and flexibility. It will keep your body and your brain moving to keep you young at heart!

Fitness, Food and Fun for Youth (13 to 18 years)

A free fitness program focused on youth offering a variety of obstacle course/relay style fun mixed with general aerobics utilizing weights and bands.

    • Beginning June 14 for 4 weeks

Women’s Learn to Run (18 years and over)

Taking advantage of the fantastic trail system in Brantford, this program will meet once a week to get women excited about running and to instill a sense of accomplishment. Each session will start out with a relaxed warm up and drills, followed by a 20 to 30 minute run (options provided), and a cool down and stretch.

Let’s Move! (18 years and over)

This is gentle fitness program that will be available to all experience and ability levels. The class will include walking, and gentle body weight exercises and stretching. The class is specifically designed to encourage adults with disabilities and their siblings to get active and move together. It also helps create meaningful social and community connections!

  • Check out the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre’s library of over 150 free online fitness classes, ranging from 15 to 60 minutes long. There is something for everyone!
  • ParticipACTION has a variety of free fitness classes as well as an entire virtual class schedule for June including family fitness ideas too!
30-Day Activity Passport

Here is a fun fitness challenge that will only take a couple of minute each day. Can you complete each activity for the whole month? It is a fun and easy way for the whole family to be active and track your progress. These activities are sponsored by the Downtown Central Neighbourhood Association, Woodview Mental Health and Autism Services, Laurier Brantford
