The free compost giveaway that begins in May each year is cancelled.

Earth Day 50 – Great Global Cleanup Events Postponed

Consistent with the provincial government’s new mandate to prohibit gatherings of 5 or more people, and to help reduce the spread of coronavirus COVID-19, all Great Global Cleanup events organized through the City of Brantford as part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day (April 19 to April 25, 2020) have been postponed until further notice.

Although cleanups are important to the health and vitality of the community, the City is focused on reducing the spread of COVID-19, which takes priority over all planned public events at this time. The health and safety of participants, volunteers, and staff - as well as the entire community, remains a top priority.

Despite these cancellations, residents are encouraged to acknowledge Earth Day with individual efforts:

  • Using a trash picker or gloves, remove debris in your neighbourhood when you are taking a break outdoors while social distancing from other people by at least 2 metres (6 feet)
  • Create a compost pile
  • Purchase products with little to no packaging
  • Recycle and dispose of waste properly. Need help sorting? Use Brantford's Recycle Coach app to see what goes where and when in your neighbourhood.

When cleaning up litter found locally in your neighbourhoods, it is mandatory that you practice social distancing while doing so. Please ensure you keep a safe distance of at least 2 metres or 6 feet from those around you and stay home if you are self-isolating from travel abroad or are feeling unwell.

Participating residents are reminded of the following important preparation and set out requirements for any collected garbage and recyclable materials:

  • Place all garbage and recyclable at curbside by 7:00 am on your scheduled day of collection.

Garbage Requirements

  • Place all facial tissue, paper towel and disinfecting wipes in the garbage
  • All loose garbage should be bagged or placed in an appropriate container
  • Residents can set out up to five containers or bags of garbage each week
  • Each container/bag must weigh less than 25 kg (55 lbs)
  • If you are disposing of a mattress/box spring please schedule a bulk item pick-up
  • Mattresses/box springs must be wrapped in plastic for collection

Recycling Requirements

  • Please do not bag your recyclables. Leave items loose and empty in the Blue Boxes.
  • Please sort materials into two Blue Boxes:
    - Box 1 – Paper, boxboard and cardboard
    - Box 2 – Food and Beverage containers & cartons - Flatten and tie large cardboard boxes into bundles no larger than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm (30" x 30" x 8") and place securely beside or between Blue Boxes

A sincere thank you to volunteers, committee members and sponsors for their support of this community event. A communication regarding rescheduling of this event will be publicized as soon as it is confirmed.

Parking Lots Reopened at Three Locations

The following parking lots will remain open for trail and park users:

  • Mohawk Park upper lot
  • Waterworks Park
  • Civic Centre parking lot (Brant’s crossing)

All other trail and park parking lots are closed.

Brantford Trails

All trails within Brantford’s city limits currently remain open. The public is reminded that ATV's, e-bikes and motorized bikes are not permitted on trails. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters used for accessibility are allowed. Bicycles and leashed dogs are also permitted. All trail users must keep a physical distance of at least 2 metres (6 feet) from others and are asked not to congregate while using trails.

Parking Enforcement

City Lots #3, #4 and the Market Centre Parkade in the downtown are now free to park. Patrons are reminded to only use the garage and surface lots for temporary parking and to practice physical distancing by parking in alternating spots, when available. On-street parking bylaws City-wide, including the downtown, are still in effect with the exception of time limit restrictions, which will be enforced on a complaint basis only. Parking enforcement in private lots registered with the City will continue to be enforced.

Parking enforcement provides service that is required to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the City’s road network, and the City encourages that all users maintain safe practices by obeying all parking signage.
