Brantford community shares their favourite Walter stories

Walter Gretzky

Brantford, ON – A few weeks ago, the City issued a request to residents to submit their fondest memory of Brantford’s beloved Lord Mayor Walter Gretzky. The response was overwhelming as several stories and photos were submitted. Using some of those submissions, a tribute video was created to honour Walter Gretzky and his contributions to Brantford and its residents. The Let’s Talk about Walter video can be viewed on the Let’s Talk about Walter project page on www.LetsTalkBrantford.ca and the City of Brantford’s YouTube channel.

“The video is absolutely amazing. Our father always said that Brantford was the centre of the universe. He would be so touched and very humbled by this overwhelming outpouring of gratitude towards him,” says Glen Gretzky.

While all of the submissions could not be included in the first version of the video, the City plans to create a longer version to include more submissions. All of the stories or photos that were submitted can be viewed on the Let’s Talk about Walter project page on www.LetsTalkBrantford.ca.

“I am not at all surprised by our community’s response to a call for stories about Walter. While he will always be remembered for his countless contributions to charitable causes and, of course, as Canada’s most famous hockey dad, in Brantford nearly everyone has a story about Walter, which is why he will be affectionately remembered as our dear friend, colleague, coach, mentor, neighbour, and an extraordinary ambassador for our community,” says Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis.

The Let’s Talk about Walter video is one of the many ways the City will honour the legacy of Brantford’s beloved Lord Mayor. In 2020, the City renamed the newly renovated Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf course in his honour. Later this year, a portrait of Walter will be unveiled at the golf course that bears his name. Additionally, Glenyhyrst Art Gallery of Brant is currently raising funds to create a tribute bust in Walter’s honour with plans to feature the special tribute at Brantford’s new City Hall at 58 Dalhousie Street.
