City and partners recognize International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford, Brantford Immigration Partnership, local organizations, and educators will be hosting a community event in recognition of UNESCO’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in  Brantford Public Library’s Auditorium, located at 173 Colborne Street.

Consistent with the City’s Inclusive Communities Plan, this event is an opportunity to bring the community together to learn about race and racism in Brantford, as well as social change and collective actions that can be taken to work towards the elimination of racial discrimination. All are welcome to attend this free event. Light refreshments will be provided. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. for registration. Please reserve your spot by registering at bit.ly/ERDSeminar.

The event will include the following speakers:

  • Saleha Khan from Brantford Police Service and Penny McVicar from Victim Services of Brant who will discuss the impact of racism on community safety and the underreporting of race-related hate crimes.
  • Babita Jedig, Yaqoob Bromand and Suzan Al-Saheb from Wesley sharing information on Wesley’s services, statistics about newcomers, and the existing racial barriers to accessing supports.
  • Professor Nuha Dwaikat-Shaer from Wilfrid Laurier University who will discuss race and the elimination of racism from an academic perspective, as well as their lived experience as a Newcomer to Canada and the Brantford area. 

The City of Brantford joined the UNESCO Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities in May 2022, which highlights the City’s ongoing commitment to working with community partners to eliminate racism and discrimination while promoting diversity, inclusion and belonging in our community.
