City announces additional measures to mitigate risk of Covid-19 community spread

Brantford City Hall

BRANTFORD, ON: The Corporation of the City of Brantford is committed to doing all we can to protect the health and safety of our citizens. The City’s Emergency Management Planning Committee met again this morning to assess the current Covid-19 situation in our area and to put preventative measures in place to mitigate community spread.

We also continue to work closely with our partners at the Ministry of Health, the Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) and the Brant Community Health System (BCHS).

Health inquiries
In the city of Brantford, BCHU is the lead agency for local information about Coronavirus (Covid-19). Most people will only experience mild effects if they contract COVID-19. If symptoms require medical attention, residents are asked to:

  • call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000
  • call BCHU at 519-753-4937 or visit bchu.org
  • call their health-care provider
  • call 911, if you need immediate medical assistance
  • if you plan to go to the emergency department call ahead at 519-751-5818.

Current Impacts to City Programs and Services
Consistent with the advice provided by Public Health Canada and to help mitigate the onset of community spread in our region, the City of Brantford announced a series of cancellations of non-essential programs and services. For the purposes of providing direction to the public, “non-essential” is defined as meetings or programs that are not legislatively mandated, time sensitive, or that have a direct impact the health and safety of residents.

New today is the announcement of the closure of all City owned Community Centres and facilities, including the Tourism Centre, Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts, the Beckett Adult Leisure Centre, Bell Homestead, Doug Snooks Community Centre, Lions Park Arena, the Civic Centre, Woodman Community Centre and T.B. Costain will be closed effective Monday March 16th, 2020 until at least April 5, 2020. An assessment of the current situation will be conducted a week prior to that date and any new information will be shared publicly on March 26, 2020.

The Brantford Public Library also announced today that the library will be closed effective March 14, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. until further notice. Residents are encouraged to visit the Library’s online resources for a host of electronic resources that can be used from home.

A complete list of non-essential City programs and services that have been suspended until at least April 5, 2020 is available at brantford.ca/closures.

The City of Brantford is grateful to our residents for their ongoing co-operation and understanding of the measures the City is putting in place to protect our citizens at this time.

Any additional updates regarding City programs and services, and the continuity of essential services will be shared regularly on the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages and at brantford.ca/Covid-19.
