City Council unanimously approves Active Transportation Master Plan

BRANTFORD, ON – In a significant step toward creating a safer, healthier, and more connected community, Brantford City Council unanimously approved the Active Transportation Master Plan at their meeting held on October 24, 2023. This comprehensive plan outlines the blueprint for developing an integrated cycling and pedestrian network throughout Brantford over the next 10 to 15 years.

“This approval marks a pivotal moment for Brantford,” Manager of Traffic Services, David Ferguson, emphasized. “Our commitment to the Active Transportation Master Plan reflects our dedication to safer roads and healthier lifestyles for our residents. This plan is a critical component of the City of Brantford’s Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate serious and fatal collisions on our roadways.”

The Active Transportation Master Plan will help create dedicated and secure infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, making the city safer for all road users. It aligns with the Vision Zero goal of reducing injuries and fatalities to zero, particularly among vulnerable road users, who are at a higher risk of harm when involved in motor vehicle collisions.

As this network takes shape, it will establish vital connections to key destinations in Brantford, seamlessly linking neighbourhoods, parks, schools, and businesses. Active transportation not only serves as a mode of travel, but also offers significant health benefits like enhancing heart health, bone health and muscle strength, and reducing the risk of chronic health diseases.

Moreover, the Active Transportation Master Plan aligns with Brantford’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing air quality. By investing in active transportation, the City aims to alleviate traffic congestion, assist with better air quality, and empower residents to lead healthier lives.

This strategic investment in establishing a comprehensive system of interconnected paths will create a more vibrant and sustainable community, offering improved quality of life and leisure opportunities for all Brantford residents. To learn more, please visit Brantford.ca/ActiveTransportation.
