City invites older adults to attend Nutrition and Wellness programs throughout March

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford, and its community partners, are pleased to launch the “Let’s Stay Healthy” campaign in support of National Nutrition Month that features four free programs that encourage older adults to learn more about nutrition and wellness Tuesdays in March. This program is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The first program, Nutritional Challenges and Tips, will take place on Tuesday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Woodman Park Community Centre, located at 491 Grey St. Brant County Health Unit will take participants through a presentation covering a variety of topics such as nutrition and bone health, eating for brain health, solutions for low appetite, and eating for one. Participants will also play a game of Healthy Bingo based on the presentation.

“Nutrition is vital to the health and well-being of our aging population,” says Lisa Vermeersch, Public Health Dietitian at the Brant County Health Unit (BCHU). “That’s why BCHU is pleased to partner with the City to offer a free presentation about common nutritional challenges for older adults as part of the City’s series on Healthy Aging."

Chair Yoga will take place on Tuesday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Brantford Public Library Auditorium, located at 173 Colborne St. Modo Yoga Brant will guide participants through a gentle and accessible yoga sequence that will stretch and awaken tired joints and muscles through the support of a chair, while learning why maintaining water intake is important for your overall health and wellbeing.

Healthy Eating on a Budget will take place on Tuesday, March 21 from 1 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre located at 333 Erie Ave. A Community Food Educator from Grand River Community Health Centre will lead a presentation on healthy eating on a budget with a focus on Canada’s Food Guide. Participants will receive take-home recipes that are both health and budget friendly.

The last activity, Chair Yoga, will take place again on Tuesday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at T.B. Costain/SC Johnson Community Centre located at 16 Morrell St. Modo Yoga Brant will guide participants through a gentle and accessible yoga sequence that will stretch and awaken tired joints and muscles through the support of a chair, while learning about the connection between healthy eating habits and staying active through Yoga.

Participants will be entered to win a $50 raffle prize available to be won at each program. Space is limited, and registration for each activity is required by emailing partnerships@brantford.ca or by calling 519-759-4150 at extension 5986 and leaving a message with your name, contact information and which activities you would like to attend. Prioritizing seniors' health and wellness, and promoting opportunities for community partners to deliver neighbourhood based programming is a key component of the City's Healthy Aging Plan. These activities provide an opportunity for older adults to learn more about their health remain active and connected to our community, which can help to improve overall wellbeing.
