BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford is creating a Solid Waste Management Master Plan to help determine how waste is collected, managed and reduced in our community over the next 25 years. The Plan aims to find methods to avoid the amount of waste that ends up in the Mohawk Street Landfill in order to provide a more sustainable future for Brantford.

The Plan’s main target is to increase the City’s waste diversion rate from 34 per cent to at least 70 per cent. This means finding significant ways to reduce the amount of waste that ends up at the landfill by encouraging residents and businesses to practice methods such as reducing waste, repurposing items and participating in the City’s recycling and green bin programs. If action isn’t taken now, the Mohawk Street Landfill will be full in approximately 40 years.

How to get involved

Residents are invited to provide feedback through an online survey at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/SolidWastePlan. The survey will be open until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Open Houses

The City of Brantford Environmental Services staff will host five open houses throughout the city where residents can learn more about the Solid Waste Management Master Plan and how it could affect their curbside collection services. City staff will present the objectives, vision and goals of the Solid Waste Management Master Plan, explain how residents can take action, gather feedback and answer questions. The open houses will take place in each ward on the following dates:

  • Ward 5: Wednesday, June 11, 2025, drop in between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre, 333 Erie Ave, Brantford

Quick facts

  • 51 per cent of Brantford's garbage could be kept out of landfills by properly sorting waste into the Green Bin, Blue Boxes and other diversion programs.
  • About 36 per cent of waste is food related. By participating in the City's Green Bin program, greenhouse gases can be removed from the landfill.
  • As part of a provincial effort beginning in 2025, the City’s Blue Box program has shifted to the responsibility of product producers. Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization, aims to enhance Ontario’s Blue Box program by standardizing acceptable materials across the province in 2026.
