City launches free Community Education Series

BRANTFORD, ON – The City of Brantford, in partnership with the Brant Elder Abuse Awareness Committee, the Community Legal Clinic of Brant Haldimand Norfolk, and Victim Services of Brant, is pleased to offer a free Community Education Series from November 29 to December 6, 2021. The series provides options for youth, adults and seniors to participate and learn more about various topics including Self-advocacy, Tenants’ Rights, Wills and Power of Attorney (POA), and Elder Abuse Awareness and prevention.

“The City is committed to working with our community partners to deliver important programs to support residents,” says Chris Henderson, Community Development Coordinator, City of Brantford. “The Community Education Series is an opportunity for residents to strengthen community connections, access community resources and learning, and improve overall well-being.”

During the Tenants’ Rights workshop, the Community Legal Clinic will review some common myths about being a tenant on Monday, November 29 at 10:00 a.m. and a youth session on Wednesday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. The Self-advocacy workshop will help participants understand their rights and review key strategies to manage personal affairs and how to advocate on Wednesday, December 1 at 10:00 a.m. and a youth session on Monday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m.

The Community Legal Clinic will also present the Wills and Power of Attorney (POA) workshop that includes important information to protect yourself and gain security with these documents on Friday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m. and Monday, December 6 at 1:30 p.m. During the It’s Not Right Training: Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention workshop, Victim Services will discuss elder abuse, local resources and steps to take when responding to elder abuse on Monday, December 6 at 10:00 a.m.

The Community Education Series directly connects to the City’s Healthy Aging: Age-Friendly Strategy and the RIGHT Now: Community Strategy to Prevent and Address Elder Abuse.
