City launches “Let’s Clear the Air” Awareness Campaign

Let's Clear the Air

Brantford, ON – In an effort to ensure a healthier environment for residents and visitors, last month Brantford City Council adopted amendments to the City’s Smoking - Clean Air By-Law (Municipal Code Chapter 570).

Council’s decision to go smoke-free on City property is consistent with their commitment to implement the Healthy Brantford Task Force goal of prohibiting smoking and vaping on municipal properties.

As a result of implementation of the new by-law, smoking of tobacco or cannabis, or vaping of any substance is prohibited on municipally owned property. This means no smoking or vaping is permitted at:

  • City owned administrative buildings, including parking lots
  • City-owned golf courses
  • City-owned recreational centres
  • City-owned sports facilities
  • Parks
  • Sidewalks on City building property or within a public park
  • Trails

A ticket and fine will be issued to those who do not follow the law with a maximum fine of $5,000.

Smoking or vaping is permitted on private property (subject to landowner policies and/or permissions) and on sidewalks adjacent to a City street.

To help the public understand and comply with this important change, today the City launched a “Let’s Clear the Air” awareness campaign that will include online and print advertising, a YouTube Video, outdoor digital boards, transit shelters, community posters, and information on the City’s website. New signage on City properties will also be rolled out over the coming months.

“The objective of the ‘Let’s clear the air’ campaign is to make the public aware of the changes to the smoking by-law while also urging people in the community to be respectful of others, especially in public areas where many people often gather”, said Sandy Jackson, the City’s General Manager of Community Programs, Parks and Recreation.

The awareness campaign will run this month and again in July, 2019. For more information, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the City’s website at brantford.ca/CleanAirBylaw.
