BRANTFORD, ON – At their meeting held February 28, 2023, Brantford City Council proclaimed the hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. today, Saturday March 25th as Earth Hour to raise awareness that climate change is the biggest environmental threat to our planet, and to encourage residents to take action.

Led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour has grown from a symbolic event in one city to the world's largest grassroots movement to raise awareness of the impact of climate change.

The City of Brantford will be participating in this important initiative by turning off all non-essential lighting at City facilities during Earth Hour this evening. Lighting affecting public safety, security and services - such as streetlights, traffic lights, park pathway lighting and parking lot lights at City facilities will remain operational.

City facilities participating in Earth Hour today include:

  • Brantford City Hall and Clock Tower
  • T.B. Costain Community Centre
  • Doug Snooks Community Centre
  • Woodman Community Centre
  • Branlyn Community Centre
  • Beckett Adult Leisure Centre
  • Brantford and District Civic Centre
  • Lions Park Arena
  • Environmental Services Building
  • Transit Services Yard
  • Parks Services Yard
  • Operational Services Yard

We encourage residents and businesses to join the hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world that unite each year to support this massive environmental event. Turn off your lights for one hour and help shine a light on climate action.

If you use candles, please keep in mind these important tips:

  • Use sturdy candleholders. Candles with glass shades or chimneys are best.
  • Keep candles safely away from anything that can burn.
  • Keep candles and matches away from children.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • Blow out or extinguish the candle if you leave the room.
